Red door animal shelter is a Chicago based shelter, it was founded in 1998 and is one of only five no-kill, multi-species shelters in the USA, they not only take in dogs and cats but also rabbits as well. Red Door provide the residents in it’s care with a cage less environment as they feel this gives the residents the closest to home experience that a shelter can provide. They also utilise the foster home for residents as well and foster dogs go along to the regular adoption events run by Red Door. They have regular spa day fundraisers for dogs, bunnies and cats and an annual sponsored walk to raise much needed funds and you will see many Red Door ex residents on the walk doing their little bit for the shelter that helped them find their forever homes. Red Door’s Buddy programme allows you to donate by becoming an online Biddy for one of their residents, a donation of $25 ( £15.50 ) will help provide a needy resident with Vet care, shelter and food before going on to a new, safe and loving home.
To adopt from Red Door you must be over 22 years of age and have id that shows your current address and phone number, you will need to be in employment or to show that you have a regular stable income to provide for your new pet. You will need to be able to provide your landlords name and number or a copy of your current lease if you rent your home and you must provide the name and number of your past or current veterinarian.
Prior to being adopted all animals are spayed/neutered, vet checked and micro chipped. Cats are also tested for FIV & FEL V, Dogs are tested for heartworms. Cat and dogs are vaccinated for distemper, rabies and bordatella as well. Rabbits are litterbox trained. The fees for adoption are reasonable.
Red Door has recently started Rabbit boarding so that when you go on vacation you can leave your rabbit knowing he or she will be very well cared for in it’s own little rabbit condo…………. how pawesome is that ?
I can say hand on heart that this is a fabulous shelter and one I am very happy to give a 10 paw recommendation
